What Are The Differences Between Private and Pro-Bono Lawyers?
Pro bono legal providers provide free legal representation. Lawyers at these organizations are typically very experienced in asylum and have good reputations. However, pro bono legal providers often have limited space for new clients, it is a long process to find out if you are selected to be represented, and you have to provide a lot of information, including your personal statement and evidence, before they make a decision to represent you.
Private lawyers charge for legal representation. There are good private lawyers, but unfortunately, there are also unprofessional ones who can do more harm than good to your case. The typical cost for an affirmative asylum application is $5,000-7,000. Hiring a private lawyer can be faster than trying to find a pro bono lawyer, and private lawyers can often give you more attention since they aren’t as overextended as pro bono legal providers. However, you must make sure you’re contracting a reliable private lawyer.
